This poll was inspired by Cybermagellan's query.  Thanks for the idea!

Missing option:

Kopote -- Standard IM program w/ KDE, use it on my Kubuntu box.

You should always put an "other" option on a poll like this.

Does "MSN Messenger" include "MSN Web Messenger"?

Anyway, I voted Windows Messenger, it's sheer simplicity is all I need in an IM client.

You forgot Odigo !!!
http://www.odigo.org/

Had some great fun with that, and what's more, I met a fantastic girl on Odigo and we got together and had a relation for like 1,5 year

She's still one of my best friends now, all thanks to Odigo

But times have changed now, and in the country where I live, MSN/Windows Messenger has acquired the complete, 100% market share (excluding geeks testing out other software of course).

AIM never existed here, that's a US thing only, right?

ICQ was popular once (in a distant past), but same story: got wiped out completely by the MS messengers

And with teenagers it's even more amazing: they are ALL on MSN, they don't even ask anymore "Do you have MSN?", it's just: "What's your MSN address?".
Just like a phone or gsm number, every teen has an MSN Messenger address nowadays.

It may sound unbelievable, but this is not exaggerated, it's really near 100% with youngsters: even in the rare case that a student would not have access to a computer at home, friends, family, ... they still have an MSN address at school, because as part of secondary education every pupil creates an address at school (it's one of the first lessons IT - creating a .NET passport and using hotmail/msn...)

Interesting to know what the situation in other countries / parts of the world is...

Work: Skype, mandated by the company.
Personal: Windows Messenger. No way I'm 'upgrading' to the advert-infested MSN Messenger.

You forgot "none of the above" as an option.

I don't use IM.

I voted for Trillian as it integrates my accounts (MSN, ICQ, Jabber and Yahoo) except Skype and Google Talk

Trillian + IMeverywhere ==

IMeverywhere is a trillian plugin where I can just connect to my home pc to access my trillian account via browser. Kinda like VNC, 'cept it's nicer

But I do use MSN Messenger though... Trillian can't match it (yet).

First post!

Trillian Pro's Jabber works.
Trillian doesn't come with Jabber.
I've successfully connected to Google Talk with GAIM and Psi, to name two...

I'm too cheap to pay for Trillian Pro, but I've talked to someone on Google Talk who was connected with Trillian Pro.

If a Jabber client doesn't work with Google Talk, it's either broken or it doesn't support an XMPP feature that Google Talk requires.

EDIT: or did you mean the "Talk" part of Google Talk? I could well believe that most Jabber clients wouldn't support the VOIP bit.

I use Google Talk. To save myself from involvement in arguments I won't vote on WHAT it is.

Well, in Australia, most of us (teenagers) have Messenger Addresses, but because nearly every school in the country runs using SINA web software, which as a rule blocks the MSN top level domain (also rendering mostly the redirect links on the Microsoft Homepage useless, by the way) I can't say much for creating an email address with .NET passport.

Our email addresses all end up like this:

(lastname)(firstinitial)@(school).(extra information, such as diocese in the case of Catholic schools).edu.au

EDIT: Sorry about the double post.

What really bugs me about Windows/MSN Messenger is that you can't leave a message if the user is offline. This is the major disadvantage over other IM protocols.

I agree with you.
Anyway, I guess Microsoft will implement this feature one day, maybe with the release of Live Messenger.

Anyway, I use MSN Messenger and am waiting for an invitation to join the Live Messenger Beta..

I use MSN because that's what most of my friends use... and I have my hotmail account like FOREVER... but have been playing recently with gmail, so I might use gmail chat in the future.

Downloaded AOL IM the other day and don't really like the interface.. I think MSN messenger is also getting complicated and I think IM's interface should be kept simple with not too may distractions.

love trillian since i can combine everything in one!
